10 Recommended History TV Dramas and Films

In no particular order...

  1. Poldark (2015-): Based on a novel, Ross Poldark returns from the war in America to find his whole life has been turned around. At the moment this is my favourite TV show.
  2. Belle: Set during the plight of the Slave Trade, 'Belle' shows how a mixed race woman (Dido Elizabeth Belle), the daughter of a slave and an upper class English gentleman, struggles through life being abused, ignored and shunned because of her heritage.
  3. Victoria: Victoria is an ITV series about the young Queen Victoria. The drama stars Jenna Coleman and Tom Hughes and focuses early Victorian politics and royalty.
  4. The Greatest Showman: This film is still in cinemas now and focuses on P.T Barnum's circus in 19th Century America. 'The Greatest Showman' stars Hugh Jackman, Zendaya and Zac Efron.
  5. The King's Speech: The King's Speech is a film about King George VI's stutter and how he overcame it with the help of his speech therapist when he became king. Colin Firth plays George VI and Geoffrey Rush as Lionel Logue.
  6. Call the Midwife: I love Call the Midwife. Based on Jenifer Worth's autobiographies, Call the Midwife follows the lives of nuns and midwives caring for East end mothers and their babies during the 1950s and 60s.
  7. The Book Thief: This is a film based on Marcus Zusak's novel of the same name. Liesel, a girl orphaned by the Holocaust is fostered by a family who go on to shelter a Jew in Nazi occupied Germany. It stars Emily Watson and Geoffrey Rush.
  8. Upstart Crow: This BBC comedy is not really historically accurate but it is based on William Shakespeare's life. 'Upstart Crow' is a comedy in which Shakespeare is played by the British comedian David Mitchell.
  9. Hidden Figures: Hidden Figures is the untold story of the black women behind NASA and the first time America launched a human into space.
  10. Bill: A BBC film performed by the cast of Horrible Histories. 'Bill' is a fictional film that leans towards the truth about William Shakespeare during the unknown part of the playwright's life. It stars Mathew Baynton and Damien Lewis.
